Comments by Fran Power, Co-Founder:

After seven years, at the end of the season on May 1, 1984, Robert Raines retired from the NSYO to further his career in Toronto. Acadia University professor and clarinetist Dr. Stan Fisher took over the Music Director position for the next four years. In the meantime, I started to gather funds to purchase percussion equipment, which is quite expensive, over and above the cost of running the orchestra. The NSYO began its 8th year with the new conductor, and new percussion instruments (including a full set of four brand new timpani) thanks to the fundraising efforts of the NS Department of Culture, recreation and Fitness, the Windsor Foundation, Maritime Telegraph and Telephone Company (MT&T), and the NSYO Parents' Committee. Those same instruments are still in use by the NSYO today.
