2008 Concerto Competition Winner
Maia Bruce, Violincello
Sixteen year old cellist Maia Bruce was born in Halifax. She is in the International Baccalaureate Program at Prince Andrew High School in Dartmouth. Maia has studied cello since the age of five with Olive Shaw at The Maritime Conservatory Of Performing Arts and is currently studying with Ifan Williams. Maia has had the opportunity in 2006 and 2007 to study at the National Arts Centre's Young Artist Program, an international summer program for young musicians. There, she had the privilege of studying with Margaret Munro Tobolowska, Carole Sirois, and Hans Jorgen Jensen. In 2006, Maia also attended the Port Milford Chamber Music Program in Ontario.
Maia was first place winner in the Nova Scotia Provincial Music Festival, representing Junior Strings in both 2006 and 2007, and also first place winner for chamber music with the Maritime Conservatory of Performing Arts Trio in 2006. Maia is a member of the MCPA Quartet, the MCPA Senior Advanced Orchestra and The Nova Scotia Youth Orchestra.
Maia has been the recipient of scholarships from The Nova Scotia Talent Trust and String Music Atlantic. Other Scholarships include the Julia Myra Memorial Scholarship, the Julius and Sara Silverman Scholarship, and the Ifan Williams Memorial Scholarship. Most recently Maia was a provincial finalist in the Canadian Music Festival, and the winner of the Nova Scotia Youth Orchestra's Concerto Competition for 2008-2009.
